Microsoft 365 is retiring legacy email protocols: what does this mean?
Microsoft is modernizing the way Microsoft 365 communicates with third-party software. As part of this transition, traditional email protocols are being gradually restricted and phased out in favor of Microsoft Graph API, the new standard for integrating with Microsoft 365. This change may impact organizations that rely on third-party software to process emails, invoices, EKT and EDI messages, or other business documents on a daily basis.
From Legacy Protocols to Microsoft Graph API
For many years, business applications have relied on protocols such as SMTP, POP3, IMAP, and Exchange Web Services (EWS) to communicate with Microsoft mailboxes. Microsoft is now gradually replacing these technologies with Microsoft Graph API, which is becoming the standard integration method for Microsoft 365. Organizations that continue to rely on legacy protocols may experience:
• Sending limits during peak periods
• Delays in email delivery
• Limitations in existing software integrations
• Future compatibility issues as legacy protocols are further phased out
Please note: These changes apply only to Microsoft 365 (Office 365) mailboxes. If your organization does not use Microsoft 365 for email, your email traffic will generally continue to function as usual, without being affected by these changes.
